The Sprinkler Dilemma

We've been talking sprinklers.

Our garden is fully planted and with any luck we'll start seeing some sprouts in a few days. Currently, we have a hose with multi-setting spray nozzle which works great! But after a particularly distracted garden maintenance session where some plants went unwatered, we had a talk about how we can solve the problem. Answers were sparse until we framed the garden as a business.

Guide: Ok, you are a farmer and you are planning to sell these veggies when they are fully grown. How do you make sure that they get enough water every day no matter what.

Eagle 1: We could hire someone to do it (looks at me with hope in his eyes)!

Eagle 2: We could just get a sprinkler.

Eagle 3: WE HAVE SPRINKLERS AT OUR HOUSE THAT ARE ON TIMERS AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING!

Guide: Ok, so how would we get a sprinkler?

Eagle 2: We'd have to buy one.

Guide: How much do they cost?

(several minutes later, after lots of online shopping)

Eagle 2: Ok the automatic ones are pretty expensive but we could get one for $11 and then all we would have to do is turn it on.

Guide: Is it worth $11 to make sure all the plants get water?

Eagles collectively: Yes!

Guide: Great, how are you going to get $11?

(Pause)

Eagle 3: We could work for it.

Eagle 1: Or you could buy us one (looks at me with hope in his eyes)!

Guide: I already bought you a hose and a sprayer, if you want to upgrade it you'll have to figure out a way!

We've been revisiting this throughout the week and the Eagles have tried to beg, borrow, and everything short of steal their way into a watering upgrade. They have one option in the eagle buck store to double their watering output, a second hose and nozzle, but if they want a sprinkler head, they are going to have to figure out how they are going to get their hands on one.

If you want to start a business, nobody is going to hand you the tools you need to get started. YOU have to do the research, YOU have to figure out how to get what you need, and YOU have to put in the effort to make it happen. Fostering this mindset now is going to make some powerful leaders in the future who know how to make things happen. I'm hoping we have a sprinkler by the end of the year and I will have nothing to do with it!
